What is Core Stability?
Core stability is the training of the abdominal muscles to support the spine and is fundamental to the Pilates method and current physical therapy treatment of lower back pain.
The latest research from Queensland (Hodges et al 1997) suggests that the deepest layer of abdominal muscle known as the transversus abdominus is responsible for supporting the lower back. It is therefore known as a stability muscle and as its main function is to stabilise our trunk or core.
Core stability is important as it provides a protective muscular corset, reducing excessive movement of vertebrae, discs and neural structures. It helps prevent lower back pain caused by the incorrect and extreme placement of the spine.
